Mercury in the signs - Cancer

Emotional (over-) reaction

Someone with Mercury in Cancer, react intuitively and generally add a large amount emotion in their verbal or written communication and the way they express themselves. Cancer is a water sign and as such, ways of expression can be quite fluid to the point of being unclear at times. Mercury in Cancer reacts from an emotional point of view which can seem a little out of the blue to other people and irrational. Someone with this placement needs to be careful not be led – or mislead - by emotions alone. Much of how the reactive and emotional nature is externalised depends on the Moon sign – the planet which rules Cancer.

Mercury in Cancer goes through life in a cyclical way – three steps forward two steps backwards, always depending on their mood, is how they ultimately reach their goal. A person with this placement tend to be very considerate in the way they approach subjects, so this is a good placement for someone who has to provide regular feedback to staff, e.g. someone working in Human Resources where tact and the right tone is often desired. This Mercury understands his environment instinctively which is a great gift, just don’t ask him to put into words what going on in his head!

The Who drummer, Keith Moon, had his Mercury in Cancer.

While other aspects of the chart support sudden outbursts of emotions, his Mercury  conjunct Pluto in the signs of Cancer ensured these outbursts had a fairly violent edge to them.
