Mercury in the signs - Sagittarius

Optimistic and full of enthusiasm

By Paul Manship
Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of expansion, optimism and wisdom. So, someone with Mercury in Sagittarius, wants to come across as wise, cheerful, optimistic and broad-minded. While much depends on the state of Jupiter in the chart, often this is the case.

Sagittarius is also the sign of the teacher, so Mercury in this sign makes a capable instructor, trainer, salesperson, tour guide or sports coach. Mercury in Sagittarius always tries to take the global viewpoint, easily bridging the gap between different philosophies and cultures. If other factors in the chart support this, then Mercury in Sagittarius can also be the religious preacher – the one who goes on pilgrimages and missions all of the world to spread the word. However, this can also be the placement of someone who use his broad vocabulary for propaganda purposes.

Nevertheless, this is an open-minded and tolerant Mercury constantly on the search for the deeper meaning and the truth. Mercury in Sagittarius is the one who always asks and needs to have the answer to Why?. Once he gets talking, he enjoys explaining situations, connections and the origins of something, at times, with a few embellishments and additional excursion into parallel or completely separate topics to make sure the point is illustrated as much as possible.

Someone with this placement has the ability to motivate people, he can paint the bigger picture and broad vision that is necessary to keep a team together and working towards the same goal. This also applies to romance where he paints a beautiful image of a future together – sometimes already on the first date. As with all planets in Sagittarius, there is the danger to make promises out of a pure joy for life and his innate optimism that later on turn out to be impractical and unrealistic.
